Google just lost Jeff Dean after 27 years — and he isn't leaving alone. Four of Google's most important AI and engineering researchers are leaving to launch Discovery Loop while Google DeepMind goes through a major leadership shake-up. Jeff Dean, Sanjay Ghemawat, Quoc Le, and Oriol Vinyals are joining forces to build Discovery Loop, a new AI company focused on accelerating scientific and engineering discovery. At the same time, Demis Hassabis is stepping away from the day-to-day operation of Google DeepMind and moving into his new role as Chair of Google DeepMind and Chief Scientist of Alphabet, while Koray Kavukcuoglu takes over day-to-day leadership of Google's core AI organization.
