What No One Tells You About Making a 17-Minute AI Backrooms Film

From the creator

A 17-minute Backrooms short film, made by one person with AI. Javi Lopez, co-founder of Magnific, walks me through how he pulled it off, the "don't do handheld" lesson, and the thing no one tells you about making a film this long alone: form a band. This is the first of what might become a recurring thing: other AI filmmakers on the channel, so I can steal their workflows and pass them on to you. The longest AI short I've made is about eight minutes, so I wanted to know how Javi handled a 17-minute monster, and what he learned doing it. Tell me in the comments if you want more of these. Selfishly: I want their workflows. - The Backrooms in under a minute: one image posted in 2019, Kane Parsons' 2022 YouTube series made in Blender at 16, and now a shared internet mythology anyone can build in. Endless liminal space with monsters in it. - Who Javi Lopez is: co-founder of Magnific, the AI upscaler everyone was trying to reverse-engineer in 2023, acquired by Freepik, and now the name on the whole platform. Through all of it he kept putting out his own creative work. - Javi's road to the Backrooms: the earlier films, the cruise-ship story, and the question he set out to answer: do we already have the tools to make something more professional? - Why he dripped the cruise-ship story out in pieces instead of posting one long video, and why building lore beats explaining everything. - The open-source IP question. The Backrooms is a playground and a quick way to get eyeballs, but when you play with other people's toys, a lawyer can take them away. - Magnific: pretty much every image and video model in one place, plus the corners worth poking into. Image-to-3D (Meshy and friends) as a way into the Blender MCP workflow, and Magnific One, the brand-new image model with art direction built in. Its Brand Kit lets you set your brand rules once (palette, typography, imagery, tone) and keeps every output on brand as the models underneath keep improving. - The making of Backrooms Nemoris: how Javi built a 17-minute episode entirely on his own, the workflow behind it, the "don't do handheld" lesson, and the thing that actually surprised me. - The real takeaway: making a 17-minute short alone is seriously impressive. But we're not all experts in everything, and it's more fun to create with other people. Form a band. Just don't let anyone get lead singer syndrome. The third AI workshop taught by our legendary teacher, Nick Sarafa. In one of the last events we did an asset manager raised an additional £25M on their fund within a space of 9 months. This is a full-day hands-on training workshop for purposeful co-creation with AI using Claude Code. Imagine having access to hundreds of billions of dollars of computing power and knowing exactly how to make it work for you through the power of super intelligence. One person did.
