DeerFlow 2.0: ByteDance’s Open-Source Manus Alternative?

From the creator

DeerFlow 2.0: ByteDance's free, open-source AI agent alternative to Manus, runs locally with your model and files, no credits required. ByteDance released DeerFlow 2.0, a free, MIT-licensed agent built on the same premise as Manus: a virtual colleague with its own computer that executes code and generates deliverables. In ByteDance's recorded January demo on DeepSeek V3.2, DeerFlow analyzed a Titanic dataset, wrote and executed Python scripts, recovered from a crashed chart-generation attempt, and delivered eight files including a summary showing women survived at 74% and men at 19%. The agent runs on LangGraph with a single lead orchestrator that routes work through built-in skills, 23 shipped with the repo, though skills are steering instructions, not guarantees; ByteDance's frontend-design skill explicitly warns against Inter and Space Grotesk fonts, yet the agent used both in the recorded demo. Execution happens in a three-folder sandbox: uploads for your files, workspace for scratch code, outputs for finished work. Out of the box, DeerFlow's default Local Sandbox configuration does not enforce a secure isolation boundary; shell execution requires either Docker with mounted host sockets (root-equivalent control), Kubernetes pods for stronger isolation, or an explicit opt-in flag. You bring the model, any OpenAI-compatible provider, and if cloud-hosted, your prompts and page reads go to that vendor; local models via Ollama keep everything on your hardware. Minimum specs are four cores and 8GB RAM, plus separate hardware for a local model. Manus charges starting at $20/month for Pro tier (4,000 credits, variable cost per task), while DeerFlow costs nothing in licensing but shifts the bill to your infrastructure, sandbox upkeep, and token consumption. Neither vendor publishes a direct cost-per-task comparison. This is for builders who prioritize owning the agent's environment and are ready to maintain Docker isolation on their own machine. Each video takes one tool, model, or workflow and shows how it works in a few focused minutes, with the real benchmarks and real costs. We go deep on Claude Code and Cursor for AI coding, AI agents and MCP servers, the open-source AI tools and GitHub repos most people miss, RAG and vector search, fine-tuning, and running local LLMs on your own machine with Ollama and LM Studio. We compare models like ChatGPT and Claude, test AI automation with Zapier, Make, and n8n, and flag the tools that actually ship. AI Maker Residence 4

Your idea can be anything. At our last workshops, people built plant-based nutrition businesses, a way to measure planetary resilience, crochet headwear and a way to connect lonely people living in the same building. This fourth workshop is a full day at KOKO with Nick Sarafa, learning to build with Claude Code. Bring the thing you keep meaning to start. We’ll bring the pizza.
