I Tried Coding with Local AI Models for 7 Days
I wanted to try I coding with only local AI models like Qwen, Muse, and OpenAI OSS for a whole week to see how they perform. The results were interesting. To run local AI models I tested with the latest hardware from ASUS, the NUC Mini Pro PC: https://www.asus.com/au/displays-desktops/nucs/nuc-mini-pcs/asus-nuc-16-pro/ Lots of benchmarks tell you that models like Qwen 3.8 are at the frontier giving results similar to Claude Sonnet 4.8, but what are the real tests like? Well the results surprised me, and I learned a lot, especially just how important context and RAM is! That's also where having a dedicated mini PC for local AI became interesting, instead of relying entirely on the cloud, I can use the NUC as a always on local AI machine for experimenting with models 24/7 running workloads. ⭐ Big thanks to ASUS today sponsor, if you want to learn more about their latest machines like the NUC 16 Pro, check the link below! https://www.asus.com/au/displays-desktops/nucs/nuc-mini-pcs/asus-nuc-16-pro/ So if you watched the full video, you'll see my results show that maybe local AI model's aren't quite there yet. They need aren't yet as fast as cloud models unless you are overdoing it on specs, and it's almost best for them to act as failsafes or small task engines for the larger models to handle as sub-agents. What I've found is that a Mini PC really shines at running local AI agents like Hermes around the clock in your own environment. With a dedicated Mini PC as my own AI host, I can keep working while also delegating tasks to my own AI Agent that can do them at the same time. #ai #coding #asus 00:00 - I tried coding with local AI models for 7 days 00:47 - Day 1 - Hardware (ASUS NUC Mini Pro) & Software (LM Studio) 03:08 - Day 2 - Comparing AI Models - Qwen 3.8 vs Muse Glimmar vs GLM 07:16 - Day 3 - Local Models with CLI's like Claude Code 09:14 - Day 4 - AI Agents - Hermes - OpenClaw with Local LLM's 10:56 - Day 5 - Pushing the Performance - Tokens per seconds 11:22 - Day 6 - Building a 24/7 AI Assistant with Cloud AI Models and a Mini PC as the Host 12:15 - Day 7 - Final Thoughts on Local AI Models 13:06 - Conclusion & Thanks ASUS (sponsor) Want to learn design: 📘 Teach Me Design Course https://www.enhanceui.com/
