Grok 4.8 Is Coming: Elon Musk’s 2.5 Trillion Parameter Massive Upgrade!

From the creator

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCGIiO6Uo8V8vkuLOcFvf3ZQ/join Elon Musk just revealed Grok 4.8, a massive 2.5-trillion-parameter AI model built on xAI's completely rewritten C++ training stack. But here's the twist: Musk isn't claiming Grok 4.8 will beat GPT-6 Astra or Claude Fable. He's saving that prediction for Grok 4.9. So what's the real purpose of Grok 4.8? And why could its speed matter more than its intelligence? According to Musk, Grok 4.8 has 2.5 trillion parameters, compared with 2.1 trillion for Grok 4.7 and 1.5 trillion for Grok 4.6. That's a 19% increase over its predecessor. But bigger models don't automatically mean better performance. When Grok 4.7 launched on September 21, Artificial Analysis scored it at 46 on its Intelligence Index, just two points above Grok 4.6's score of 44. Despite a roughly 40% parameter increase, the overall improvement was relatively modest. Grok 4.7 reportedly consumed approximately 81,000 output tokens per benchmark task, compared with around 27,000 for GPT-6 Astra. That's roughly three times the output tokens to complete the same evaluation. For developers paying per token, that difference matters. But Grok 4.8 introduces something potentially more important than another parameter increase: xAI's new C++ software stack. Musk says the company has been rewriting its training and inference infrastructure to run closer to Nvidia's GB300 hardware, removing software layers that can slow down AI workloads. He previously predicted that the new inference system could at least double performance for an earlier Grok model. If those improvements materialize, Grok 4.8 could become a major test of whether xAI can make its increasingly massive models faster and cheaper to operate. And there's another clue. A September 28 commit in the open-source Magpie project revealed three Grok 4.8 configurations appearing in Cursor's model list: grok-4.8-high grok-4.8-high-fast grok-4.8-xhigh-fast These developer-facing identifiers suggest xAI is preparing multiple reasoning and speed configurations, although they don't confirm a release date or final capabilities. Then, on October 7, Musk said that simple requests to the Grok bot on X would eventually be handled by a "lightning-fast" version of Grok 4.8. That changes how we should think about this release. Instead of competing exclusively for the highest AI benchmark scores, xAI may be preparing a model family optimized for different workloads: demanding coding and reasoning tasks on one side, and high-volume everyday requests on the other. Meanwhile, the competition isn't standing still. OpenAI has GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6.1 Sol, and the newly released GPT-6.1 Terra. Anthropic has Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Opus 5.5. Google has entered the latest frontier-model competition with Gemini 4 Argon. And GPT-6.1 Terra presents an especially interesting challenge. At $1 per million input tokens and $5 per million output tokens, Terra already undercuts Grok 4.7's $2 input and $6 output pricing. OpenAI also claims Terra completes tasks more than three times faster than Astra or Sol. That means Grok 4.8 faces two very different battles. Its most capable configurations need to close the intelligence gap with OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google. Its fast configurations need to prove they can compete on latency, efficiency, and cost. But there are still major unknowns. xAI hasn't officially announced Grok 4.8's release date, pricing, context window, architecture, or independent benchmark results. We also don't know whether its 2.5 trillion parameters represent the entire model or the parameters active during inference. And there's no independent confirmation that the C++ rewrite delivers Musk's promised performance improvements. This video breaks down what Musk actually confirmed, what the leaked Cursor configurations reveal, how Grok 4.8 compares with its biggest competitors, and why its most important achievement might have nothing to do with becoming the smartest AI model. The real question isn't whether Grok 4.8 is bigger. It's whether xAI can finally turn that scale into meaningful intelligence gains without paying an enormous price in speed and efficiency. Your idea can be anything. At our last workshops, people built plant-based nutrition businesses, a way to measure planetary resilience, crochet headwear and a way to connect lonely people living in the same building. This fourth workshop is a full day at KOKO with Nick Sarafa, learning to build with Claude Code. Bring the thing you keep meaning to start. We’ll bring the pizza.
