This AI Tool Replaces Claude Code & is Free [Aider]

From the creator

Aider AI is the free, terminal-native Claude Code alternative that works with any model and turns git into your review surface Aider is a free, open-source AI coding tool built by one developer, Paul Gauthier, and it's become a real Claude Code alternative and cursor alternative for anyone who lives in a terminal instead of an editor. Unlike Cursor AI or Windsurf, which bundle a proprietary editor with a fixed model, Aider is model-agnostic: plug in Claude, GPT, Gemini, DeepSeek, or a local model through Ollama, and swap models with one setting instead of being locked to a vendor's stack. The core design bet is git-native review. Every AI change lands as an actual git commit with an auto-written message, so you diff, undo, and manage AI edits with the same tools you already use, instead of accepting or rejecting inside a black-box diff viewer. Aider also builds a repo map using tree-sitter syntax parsing, so it understands function signatures and codebase structure without loading every file into context, which is how a thin CLI tool stays usable on large repos. The numbers back up the traction: roughly 44,000 GitHub stars, 6.8 million PyPI installs, and about 15 billion tokens processed per week across active users, per a Codegen review. Aider's own release notes even track how much of each release it wrote itself, including one release where Aider wrote 77% of its own code. The catch: it still ships as 0.x software with occasional breaking changes to CLI flags and config files, and it has no SOC 2 or enterprise compliance program, which is where paid IDEs still win. This one's for builders who want a free ai coder that isn't tied to one model or one company, and who'd rather review AI coding output in plain git than trust a proprietary UI. Each video takes one tool, model, or workflow and shows how it works in a few focused minutes, with the real benchmarks and real costs. We go deep on Claude Code and Cursor for AI coding, AI agents and MCP servers, the open-source AI tools and GitHub repos most people miss, RAG and vector search, fine-tuning, and running local LLMs on your own machine with Ollama and LM Studio. We compare models like ChatGPT and Claude, test AI automation with Zapier, Make, and n8n, and flag the tools that actually ship.
