The Best AI Coding Setup Isn't the Most Autonomous One (Here's Why)
AI coding with tools like Claude Code and Codex has five levels, from spicy autocomplete to the fully autonomous Dark Factory. Dan Shapiro mapped them onto the five levels of self-driving cars, so you can place yourself on the ladder, and most people are lower than they think. I break down all five with an analogy that makes each one click, then add what the framework leaves out: where you should actually aim. For most people that's Level 3, in the loop, planning the work and reviewing every change, because that's what keeps software reliable. I've built a full Level 5 Dark Factory, and I'll tell you honestly why chasing it isn't the goal. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ - Get started with Gitar (just acquired by Sonar!) for free - AI code review that actually fixes your code: https://fandf.co/4eS3NLj ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ - The Dynamous Agentic Coding Course is now FULLY released - learn how to build reliable and repeatable systems for AI coding: https://dynamous.ai/agentic-coding-course - Dan Shapiro - The Five Levels (the original framework): https://www.danshapiro.com/blog/2026/01/the-five-levels-from-spicy-autocomplete-to-the-software-factory/ - My Dark Factory Experiment (Level 5 in practice): https://github.com/coleam00/dark-factory-experiment - StrongDM dark factory: https://www.strongdm.com/blog/the-strongdm-software-factory-building-software-with-ai ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 0:00 The Five Levels of AI Coding 1:00 Levels 0 to 2 Explained 3:37 Level 3: The Sweet Spot 5:05 Level 4: Engineering Teams 6:35 Level 5: The Dark Factory 9:15 Sponsor - Sonar x Gitar 11:09 Building an AI Coding System 13:43 The R-PIV Development Loop 16:41 Scaling to a Dark Factory 20:29 Future of Agentic Engineering ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Join me as I push the limits of what is possible with AI.
