Grok 4.8: Elon Musk's 2.5 TRILLION Parameter AI Is Coming…

Elon Musk says Grok 4.8 will have 2.5 TRILLION parameters, run on an entirely new C++ training stack, and be "incredibly useful." But more than seven weeks after Musk suggested pretraining was nearly complete, xAI's next flagship AI model still hasn't launched. And now Musk says he doesn't care about benchmarks. That's a fascinating position when OpenAI's GPT-5.6, Anthropic's Claude Fable 5.1, and Google's Gemini 4 are already competing for developers. Especially when Grok 4.7 reportedly gained just TWO points on Artificial Analysis's Intelligence Index while more than doubling its average output tokens. So is Grok 4.8 being built to outperform competitors on real-world tasks? Or is xAI managing expectations for a model that's struggling to catch up? On September 13–14, Musk described Grok 4.8 as a 2.5-trillion-parameter model trained using a brand-new C and C++ software stack. Pretraining was supposedly finishing that week, with reinforcement learning to follow. Then, on October 30, Musk acknowledged the delay and promised Grok 4.8 wouldn't disappoint. But here's the problem: there's still no official Grok 4.8 model card, API pricing, independent benchmark, confirmed architecture, or context-window specification. And the 2.5 trillion parameter figure? That's Musk's claim, not an independently verified specification. We break down what's confirmed, what's claimed, and what's speculation. First, there's the Grok 4.7 problem. According to reported Artificial Analysis results, its Intelligence Index improved from 44 to 46, while average output length increased from approximately 38,000 to 81,000 tokens. That raises an uncomfortable question: if a model costs less per token but uses twice as many tokens, how much are developers actually saving? Then there's Grok 4.8's mysterious architecture. A 2.5-trillion-parameter dense model would have enormous computational requirements. A mixture-of-experts (MoE) architecture could activate only a fraction of those parameters per token, potentially improving inference efficiency. But xAI hasn't confirmed which architecture Grok 4.8 uses. We also examine Musk's claimed C++ training overhaul, the potential advantages over higher-level training infrastructure, and the debugging and scaling problems that could come with rebuilding critical software during a major training run. Could that explain the delay? Possibly. Could reinforcement learning be responsible, especially after Grok 4.7's reported response-length penalty mistake? Also possible. But neither explanation has been confirmed. Meanwhile, the competition isn't waiting. GPT-5.6 Sol, Terra, and Luna are targeting different price-performance tiers. Claude Fable 5.1 raises the flagship competition. Gemini 4 Argon offers roughly a million-token context window, while Google has announced Gemini 4 Carbon with limited initial access. Grok 4.7 offers 500,000 tokens of context and API pricing of $2 per million input tokens and $6 per million output tokens. Can Grok 4.8 preserve that value while delivering a meaningful improvement? And what does Musk actually mean by "incredibly useful"? We examine how Grok Bot, Grok Build, agent workflows, cost per completed task, independent testing, and real-world coding performance could provide a more meaningful answer than a single leaderboard score. Because the biggest question isn't whether Grok 4.8 has 2.5 trillion parameters. It's whether xAI can turn those parameters into better results, at a competitive price, before the market moves on. Your idea can be anything. At our last workshops, people built plant-based nutrition businesses, a way to measure planetary resilience, crochet headwear and a way to connect lonely people living in the same building. This fourth workshop is a full day at KOKO with Nick Sarafa, learning to build with Claude Code. Bring the thing you keep meaning to start. We’ll bring the pizza.
