Gemini Spark Explained: Google’s AI That Works While You Sleep

From the creator

Typeless turns messy thoughts into clear and polished writing, and is now available on Linux. It helps developers to speak to AI agents with detailed prompts and context effortlessly, across browsers, terminals, IDEs, and other apps.Try Typeless: https://www.typeless.com/?via=1003 Google's Gemini Spark can keep working even after you close your laptop. It can manage Gmail, edit Google Docs, control Chrome, organize files, and execute multi-step tasks while you sleep. But independent testing reveals some surprising failures — including an AI agent that reportedly couldn't save a simple packing list to Google Keep. So is Google Spark really a 24/7 AI employee, or just another AI assistant with a much bigger permission slip? Announced at Google I/O in May 2026, Gemini Spark is Google's persistent AI agent, powered by Gemini 3.5 Flash and an internal orchestration system called Antigravity. Unlike regular Gemini chat or Gemini Deep Research, Spark operates on dedicated cloud virtual machines, allowing tasks to continue without your device staying online. And Google's rollout has been aggressive. In roughly ten weeks, Spark went from an AI Ultra-only U.S. beta to a globally available agent for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers across more than 160 countries. But the real story isn't how quickly Google launched Spark. It's what happens when you give an AI agent access to your digital life. Spark can search Gmail, draft emails, update Google Sheets, create presentations, manage Calendar events, and interact with websites through Chrome. It also connects to outside services including Canva, OpenTable, Instacart, Dropbox, and Zillow using the Model Context Protocol (MCP). On Mac, Connected Folders even allow Spark to edit and reorganize local files within explicitly authorized directories. That sounds like a serious step toward autonomous AI. Until you examine the restrictions. Google has built an approval system into Spark. Reading connected data generally requires no additional confirmation, but sending messages, making purchases, submitting external forms, and other consequential actions require human approval. Then there are the reliability problems. In independent testing reported by AI Chat Daily, Spark handled several everyday errands successfully but stumbled over basic instructions. It reportedly substituted a Google Doc when asked to save a packing list in Keep, returned four newsletter articles instead of five, and configured a price-monitoring task with a schedule that could miss short-lived discounts. These aren't necessarily catastrophic failures. But they're important when the entire selling point is letting an AI work without constant supervision. And access isn't free. Google AI Pro costs $19.99 per month, while AI Ultra costs $99.99 per month. Spark also consumes your existing Gemini usage allowance rather than providing a separate unlimited pool. Regional restrictions further complicate availability, particularly across the EU, UK, Switzerland, and Nigeria. Privacy raises another question. To function effectively, Spark may need access to emails, documents, calendar entries, browser sessions, and connected third-party accounts. Google says private content isn't used for model training without the relevant permissions, but automated browsing can still expose information to external websites. Then there's Google's performance marketing. Google highlighted a claim that Gemini 3.5 Flash generates tokens roughly 4x faster than GPT-4. But GPT-4 launched back in 2023. Comparing Spark's underlying model against an older OpenAI system doesn't establish how it performs against newer agent-focused competitors. With OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra and Anthropic's frontier models competing in the AI agent space, the more meaningful question isn't raw token speed. It's whether these systems can reliably finish real tasks. This breakdown examines what Gemini Spark actually does, how its permissions work, where independent testing found limitations, what subscribers pay, and whether Google's vision of an always-working AI assistant is ready for everyday use. Because there's a major difference between an AI that can take action and an AI you can trust to take action without watching it.
