Can You Run a 1 Trillion Parameter Local AI? (Mistral 4 Large)

From the creator

Mistral Large 4 ('Le Chonk') is a 1.05 trillion-parameter mixture-of-experts model, but a four-bit copy needs roughly 550, 600 GB of fast memory and seven open models already outrank it. Here's what running it at home really takes. Mistral just shipped Mistral Large 4 (internally ML4, nicknamed 'Le Chonk'), a roughly 1.05 trillion-parameter natively multimodal mixture-of-experts model with about 50 billion parameters active per token, trained from scratch on 3,800 NVIDIA Grace Blackwell GPUs in European datacenters. The weights are due by October 31, 2026, after red-teaming; until then you can only try a preview through Mistral's API. This deep dive covers what it actually takes to run it: a four-bit quantized copy demands roughly 550, 600 gigabytes of fast memory, more than a single Mac Studio can hold, so the cheapest proper copy at home is three linked 256 GB M5 Ultra Mac Studios (about $28,500 by our math), and every other route costs more. On Artificial Analysis's independent Intelligence Index, Large 4 scores 38, a massive jump from Large 3 (9), but it ranks only eighth among open models once weights ship; every higher-ranked open model comes from Chinese labs (Qwen, MiMo, GLM, Kimi, DeepSeek) and downloads today. Speed is another catch: even on linked Macs, expect generation roughly in the teens of tokens a second (our estimate), and reading a 50,000-token repository context takes around five minutes (our math) before the first token. Where it wins: it's the strongest open model outside China by a wide margin (the next closest, South Korea's Motif 3, is estimated at 34, and the leading American open models sit in the twenties), and in defensive security: on a test that asks a model to reproduce a real vulnerability in open-source software and patch it, the preview scores 82%, while Mistral says closed models like Claude Opus 5.5 and GPT-6 Astra score near zero because they refuse, and a model you host yourself cannot refuse or cut you off mid-incident. The real story is memory efficiency: open models that beat it in rankings already fit the same footprint or far less. This breakdown is for builders, security teams, and anyone asking whether to buy or rent frontier-scale AI. Each video takes one tool, model, or workflow and shows how it works in a few focused minutes, with the real benchmarks and real costs. We go deep on Claude Code and Cursor for AI coding, AI agents and MCP servers, the open-source AI tools and GitHub repos most people miss, RAG and vector search, fine-tuning, and running local LLMs on your own machine with Ollama and LM Studio. We compare models like ChatGPT and Claude, test AI automation with Zapier, Make, and n8n, and flag the tools that actually ship. Makers residency 4th edition

Your idea can be anything. At our last workshops, people built plant-based nutrition businesses, a way to measure planetary resilience, crochet headwear and a way to connect lonely people living in the same building. An asset manager went on to raise an additional £25M on their fund within nine months. The fourth workshop is a full day at KOKO with Nick Sarafa, learning to build with Claude Code. Bring the thing you keep meaning to start. We’ll bring the pizza.
