Google's Gemini Notebook Is Becoming an AI Research Workspace

From the creator

https://bitbiased.ai/ai-automation-services Google renamed NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook — but the rebrand is the least interesting part. The bigger change is that every notebook can now come with what Google calls a “secure cloud computer,” allowing Gemini to write and execute Python code against your own documents instead of simply summarizing them. That pushes Gemini Notebook much closer to a full research platform. It can answer questions from source material with clickable citations, generate podcast-style Audio Overviews, create narrated slide videos, build quizzes and flashcards, analyze data with Python, and even pull eligible Google Play ebooks you own directly into a notebook. But there are some important catches. Gemini Notebook is still source-grounded, not automatically fact-checked. A citation proves where an answer came from — it doesn’t prove the answer is correct. Conflicting sources can still cause problems, scanned PDFs and poor transcripts can contaminate everything built from them, and Google itself says users should verify generated answers against the original material. The new cloud computer is arguably the biggest technical leap. Gemini can extract information from documents, write Python, execute calculations, and return tables or charts. That puts it in territory already familiar to users of ChatGPT’s Code Interpreter. However, the feature initially arrived for Google AI Ultra and Workspace Ultra users, only Python executes automatically, and questions remain around exactly how persistent these compute environments are. Then there’s the multimedia side. Audio Overviews turn research into AI-hosted podcast conversations, while interactive voice lets you interrupt and ask questions. Video Overviews create narrated slide presentations, and Short Video Overviews compress individual ideas into roughly 60-second vertical explainers. These aren’t AI-generated movies — they’re closer to automatically assembled presentations. Gemini Notebook is also becoming a serious study tool, with flashcards, quizzes, mind maps, study guides, and Google’s LearnLM technology sitting behind parts of the education experience. And Google is expanding what counts as a “source.” Expert Intelligence lets users import eligible Google Play ebooks they already own, with Google saying more than 100,000 titles were supported at launch. Instead of relying on what an AI model remembers about a book, Gemini Notebook can work directly from the purchased text. That matters because this increasingly looks like an ecosystem play. Notebook content already connects with Gemini, while Google has said integration with Search’s AI Mode is coming. Combine that with Gemini appearing across Gmail and Docs, and your notebooks could become a persistent context layer across more of Google’s products. Google says Gemini Notebook has passed 30 million users and 600,000 organizations, but the practical limitations still matter. Usage is constrained by compute quotas, demanding features like audio and video consume that budget faster, and free notebooks have source limits. Paid plans range from AI Plus and AI Pro through AI Ultra, with higher tiers getting larger quotas and earlier access to advanced features. So what actually changed when NotebookLM became Gemini Notebook? We break down the cloud computer, source grounding, Audio and Video Overviews, Expert Intelligence, pricing and limits, Google’s wider ecosystem strategy, and where Gemini Notebook still falls short compared with tools like ChatGPT and Claude. The third AI workshop taught by our legendary teacher, Nick Sarafa. In one of the last events we did an asset manager raised an additional £25M on their fund within a space of 9 months. This is a full-day hands-on training workshop for purposeful co-creation with AI using Claude Code. Imagine having access to hundreds of billions of dollars of computing power and knowing exactly how to make it work for you through the power of super intelligence. One person did.
