Magnitude: The Ollama Killer?

From the creator

Magnitude claims 2.2× faster local AI than Ollama, but only on 19 models, M1, M4 Macs, and RTX 30-series cards where the whole model fits in GPU memory. Magnitude is a free, open-source inference engine that claims to run open models over twice as fast as Ollama through hand-tuned custom kernels and speculative drafting. On Magnitude's own benchmark, writing answers is about 2.2 times faster on average and reading prompts about 1.3 times faster, but on a fresh 64,000-token prompt, reading dominates the clock, so the complete round-trip finishes only about 1.3 times sooner. On Qwen 3.6 35B on an M4 Pro Mac, that is roughly 107 seconds on Magnitude versus 134 on Ollama. The catch: Magnitude's catalog has only 19 models (Qwen, Google, NVIDIA, Meta, Liquid and OpenBMB) with no DeepSeek, Llama, Mistral, or import for custom GGUFs, and the speed gain only lands on M1, M4 Macs, RTX 30-series or newer, or a DGX Spark, where the entire model must fit in GPU memory. Ollama's split-memory fallback and 200+ model library remain essential for older cards, models bigger than your VRAM, and AMD GPUs. Magnitude runs on its own port alongside Ollama, launched September 30, 2026, and its October release still patched GPU memory bugs in long Mac sessions. For builders running one of those 19 models on supported hardware where weights fit entirely on-GPU, it is worth testing on a single real-world coding task; for everything else, Ollama stays the workhorse. Each video takes one tool, model, or workflow and shows how it works in a few focused minutes, with the real benchmarks and real costs. We go deep on Claude Code and Cursor for AI coding, AI agents and MCP servers, the open-source AI tools and GitHub repos most people miss, RAG and vector search, fine-tuning, and running local LLMs on your own machine with Ollama and LM Studio. We compare models like ChatGPT and Claude, test AI automation with Zapier, Make, and n8n, and flag the tools that actually ship. Makers residency 4th edition

Your idea can be anything. At our last workshops, people built plant-based nutrition businesses, a way to measure planetary resilience, crochet headwear and a way to connect lonely people living in the same building. An asset manager went on to raise an additional £25M on their fund within nine months. The fourth workshop is a full day at KOKO with Nick Sarafa, learning to build with Claude Code. Bring the thing you keep meaning to start. We’ll bring the pizza.
