The New Free Coding AI Is Free Until It Isn't

OpenRouter's free Ling 3.0 Flash Fin packs 262K tokens but caps answers at 32K, a free AI API with real coding limits revealed. OpenRouter's free Ling 3.0 Flash Fin advertises 262,144 tokens of context at zero cost, but the listing hides a critical constraint: max completion tokens capped at 32,768, roughly one-eighth of the window. That matters because reasoning fires by default, drawing from the same output budget before your code answer arrives. The model is Ant Group's July 2026 release, built on selective parameter activation (124B total, 5.1B active per token), and benchmarked by Ant against their own 1T-parameter Ring-2.6-1T flagship. Two production systems, Kilo Code and OpenClaw, both open-source AI coding agents, have already pushed billions of tokens through the OpenRouter free endpoint, making this far from theoretical. But vals.ai's independent SWE-bench ranked it last on Code Migration tasks and near-zero on refactoring workloads, while LiveCodeBench placed it in the top third for self-contained problems. The finance tuning (the 'Fin' suffix) matters: OpenRouter's own description calls it a finance-focused MoE, leaving coding as a retained general capability, not the primary target. Rate limits remain undocumented for this specific endpoint, though OpenRouter's FAQ confirms free tiers are rate-limited. More critically, Ant's launch post labels the pricing 'free for one month', a promotional window that started August 27, 2026, leaving roughly three weeks before the guaranteed free tier expires. A parallel free Ling-3.0-flash base listing already shows zero providers and a traffic cliff, indicating the model graduated to paid pricing once the promotional window closed. OpenRouter's free MiniMax M3 and Nvidia Nemotron 3 Super both offer the same or larger context windows with 7, 29× longer answer budgets, undercutting Ling's core advantage. The model excels at reading large codebases and answering questions about them; it fails at generating large diffs or rewriting full files. For builders evaluating free API options and long-context workflows, this video walks through OpenRouter's endpoint data, Ant Ling's published benchmarks, and real production traffic patterns to separate the listing from the reality. AI Maker Residence at KOKO

The third AI workshop taught by our legendary teacher, Nick Sarafa. In one of the last events we did an asset manager raised an additional £25M on their fund within a space of 9 months. This is a full-day hands-on training workshop for purposeful co-creation with AI using Claude Code. Imagine having access to hundreds of billions of dollars of computing power and knowing exactly how to make it work for you through the power of super intelligence. One person did.
